May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
May was dubbed Mental Health Awareness Month in the hopes of building awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and illness. This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month focuses on promoting the message that you are never alone and that it’s okay to not be okay.
The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the mental health of many. A lot of individuals, especially those with mental illness, have experienced heightened feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and social isolation during these times. It’s now more important than ever to take care of your mental health and to help reduce the stigma.
Here are some tips and resources to help you support and prioritize your mental health!
Prioritize Self-Care
Take time for yourself to relax! Make sure to fuel your mind and body by staying hydrated and eating nourishing meals. Prioritize positive self-talk and kindness! Aim to get adequate sleep and movement daily. Acknowledge that you are trying and doing your best! Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and the two really do go hand in hand. If you’re in need of a pick me up you can practice some positive affirmations.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness helps improve mental and physical health by focusing on the present. By focusing on your breath, slowing down, and living in the moment, you can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Mindfulness can be practiced in many different ways, like when you’re walking, meditating, or even eating. For more information you can review this article for tips on mindful practices.
Reach Out
Reaching out is a skill we are somehow expected to know, but is a skill not oftentimes explained. Sometimes we don’t know exactly what we need, and that’s okay! This should not discourage us from reaching out and letting others know how we’re feeling. You might be surprised by the support someone can offer. Help your friends when you have a feeling that something is wrong by checking in and using supportive and empathetic language. For some ideas, check out this Healthline article.
Remove Negativity from Your Life
Toxic and unhealthy relationships serve as a source of stress. Eliminate these relationships and instead, surround yourself with people that lift you up! This will promote feelings of self-worth and confidence, while also supporting your mental health.
We hope these tips serve as a helpful resource. Mental Health Awareness Month is a great time to get educated on mental health, mental illnesses, and learn ways to improve the wellbeing of yourself and those around you!
